Buckley, who praised McCain in a New York Times Op-Ed earlier this year and defended the Arizona senator's conservative credentials against wary talk-radio hosts, said McCain is no longer the "real" and "unconventional" man he once admired.
"This campaign has changed John McCain," Buckley wrote. "It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget 'by the end of my first term.' Who, really, believes that?
"Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis," Buckley added. "His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?"
But Buckley made clear he's not just voting against McCain, praising Obama for his "first-class temperament and first-class intellect.
"Obama has in him—I think, despite his sometimes airy-fairy 'We are the people we have been waiting for' silly rhetoric—the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for," Buckley wrote.
McCain is not right for our country- he has no clear idealogy, sways from conservative to socialist ideas (with that foolish socialist mortgage plan), to the outright destructive (with that health care plan), makes non-conservative choices (picking an unready VP, suspending campaigns and reinstating them - the word conservative used to include being careful and sensible), and has a dangerous shoot from the hip, thoughtless approach to problem solving, and does not understand strategy (running around in Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin - when he only needs to hold all Bush states sans Iowa and New Mexico) and might also additionally be aging before our very eyes (there are things he's doing now that I doubt he would have done 8 years ago).
No doubt this is a job interview. He will not suddenly become smarter after getting elected. On the other hand, wont you just love to see your country run like the extremely efficient, highly strategic , principled, well planned campaign of the other guy (from their grassroot organization - community organization, to the debate prep, to the long term strategy, to the flawless foreign trips, resource managment, revenue generation, to the debate execution - youve got to admit a thinker is putting things together). That is what Hillary got to find out and McCain will be beaten by more being even worse than Hillary in organizational ability and executive management skills.
Too much damage has been done to the country in the last 8 years to go with McCain and Palin this time around.
ugh, this commenting system is killing me. I was just going (before whatever just happened happened) to say that I seeded the original piece in the Daily Beast this afternoon. No play on the front page though. Lame.
Yes , I agree with you.
Another well-known Republican in my neck of the woods is ex-Govenor William Milliken of Michigan. He is a sensible moderate republican whose level of respect was high and did a fine job during his 14 years as govenor of Mich.
X-Gov Milliken did endorse McCain earlier this summer though he has taken back the endorsement because of McCain/Palin mean-spiritedness .
I've personally dubbed this mean-spiritedness as the emerging "UGLY CULTURE"... , normally detected in ones facial expressions initially then proven further by thier empty spirit....I wonder what PUTIN would see in McCains' and Palin's eyes?
Agreed.
These conservatives are the ones that need to save the GOP. They're the only ones from their camp that are demonstrating a reasoned approach to the situation that the country is facing.
George Will and the others need to keep railing against the McCain/Bush/Cheney/Palin machine. This is the only way they're going to put the GOP back together again.
C. Buckley's right. For now, McCain isn't a viable option for the country. He just isn't up to the job at hand. By contrast, Obama is intelligent and has handled himself and his organization quite well.

i seeded this too, and it appears that the drooperganger is giving no love.
i'd like to leave my seed up as well to give this as much exposure as possible, but i'll remove the seed if you desire..
at this point, complacency is the only obstacle on the road to the whitehouse for Obama and YOU can do your part to clear that obstacle by making sure you get out and vote. early voting has begun in most states, so go out and "get er done"
Good to know this ame to your notice as well tscheck, Andy. This is my third seed of this type. What wee an do is collectively list all conservative republicans now supporting Obama for common sense pragmatic solutions.
Colin Powell, Michael Smerconish, Christopher Buckley, Kathleen Parker, Susan Eisenhower...
Check out http://www.republicansforobama.org/ to see how a lot of Republicans are supporting Obama, they make some of the best arguments for his Presidency!
Obama deservers the support.
"DITTO"
"Christopher Buckley, the son of the late conservative icon William F. Buckley, said Friday he's decided to back Barack Obama's White House bid, the first time in his life he will vote Democrat."

Barack Hussein Obama is going to be a wonderful president of the United States, even for those who didn't think so before and don't think so now and even those who will never say so. Why don't we all just give him a chance and be glad we get to witness another JFK or even another Lincoln in our lifetime. We have a chance to live during a hugely important and progressive time in the great history of our great nation and all we have to do is to elect Barack and watch him do it. 100 years from now the children who will be born after we are long gone will read, write and thank us for electing him. I'm 52 years old and my health is failing, but I'm glad that I get to see him as president before I go. All we have to do is to believe. I do.
I would be happy with another Jimmy Carter in our lifetime. Some dignity and honesty and the makings of a long and distinguished career in public service potentially await Obama whether he wins or loses this race. Can the same be said for McPalin?
Here is another good article about how a man who used to be a conservative, not necessarily a Republican, is voting for Obama too because he thinks that Obama represents conservativism.
My favorite quote:
I disagree with [Obama] on many issues. But those don't matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama's books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers.
With this endorsement today by Chris and McCain backing down on the fear issue telling his supporters in Wisconsin today that Senator Obama is a good and decent man and no you do not have to be scared of him as your President. Hopefully this will ratchet down the yahoo's for the last 3 weeks of the election and get back to issues. We will see at the debate this week how Capt Queeg behaves. If he is going back to his Maverick ways he may something worth wild and change the election, I doubt it but you never know so I say fight for every vote until November 4 to make sure the yahoos don't win.
We will see at the debate this week
That sums up the week for we, who are undecided Fiscal Conservatives but Progressives on Social Issues, we, who don't mind spending if there is transparency, success, and a return on investment (like Obama's Volunteer Core For College Money Idea)... Yes, this Debate is McCains last shot at me...and i'd guess a lot of others..
Silence is golden.
Silence is golden.
More and more Americans need to understand that this process is about electing a leader and not a rabble rouser. A nation that is in a serious crisis cannot afford to stoke flames of division and hate. McCain has shown over the past few weeks (what Americans should note) that he is incapable of leading this great nation.
America has transformed itself,a multiracial and freedom loving people drawn from all ends of the earth. The constitution and the progress over the years has seen to that. Barak has shown that he is the better leader this time around. True patriots should rally around him and ensure his success on merit. So much for the Palin/McCain rants !
I have worried about the nuts, due to the tone of Palin's speeches of late. It make me wonder what the true objective is. I Read most of the troopergate report. it is pretty long and takes a while. That really tells the story about how she runs the government. But the believers will deny, and say its a frame. Reort can be found on www.pissedoffoldfolks.com/akseniors.htm drop down the page about midway til you see the Sarah Palin link. Click there it is under the troopergate paragraph
Welcome to the Democratic party, Mr. Buckley. We're really glad to have you. Obama will be a great President, won't he? Looking forward to reading more of your columns!
